About Dr Khan

Practice Details

Dr Alex Khan was Called to the Bar in 2000 by the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn www.lincolnsinn.org.uk and has been a member of the Northern Circuit of the Bar since 2002. www.northerncircuit.org.uk. Dr Khan is also an active committee member of the Northern Circuit Commercial Bar Association. The specialist nature of his practice areas has meant that he is a member of both the Chancery Bar Association and the Intellectual Property Bar Association.

Academic Background

After gaining his BSc (Hons) at De Montford University, Alex returned to Manchester to complete an MSc at UMIST. He then went on to the Medical School in Birmingham to read and research for his PhD in Haematology. Whilst writing his thesis, he decided to go across the city to study at UCE for the Postgraduate Diploma in Law (PGCE). After being enticed into industry for a number of years (see below), he eventually returned to study at the Inns of Court School of Law in order to be called to the Bar.

Commercial Experience

Dr Khan’s medical research background initially led him to become editor of Pharmaceutical Technology Europe www.ptemag.com. He also spent some time as a freelance editor, copywriter and marketing consultant before taking on the management role of the Editor of Publications for the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors  www.ices.org.uk. After more than five years in industry, Alex continues to act as Consultant Director to his wife’s communications company. He contributes a similar role to various other family businesses, enabling him to maintain a realistic and pragmatic approach to legal issues on behalf of individuals, businesses and public bodies alike.

Publications

Alex is currently biotechnology correspondent for the European Intellectual Property Review.  He has written many articles and presented several seminars in relation to topics as wide ranging as Trusts of Land and Plant Varieties.
